Silk Street Car Parking Space Blunder

A community leader has apologised after a ‘councillor-only’ parking space was created in a town centre car park.

Staffordshire Moorlands District Council painted the red box around the space at Silk Street, in Leek, to prevent members of the public using it.

It was removed days later following a storm of protest from local residents on social media.

Now councillor Edwin Wain, cabinet member with responsibility for parking, has offered to cover the costs of the blunder.

He said: “I made a mistake and I have apologised to the leader and the council. It has been put right. I have no problems with the cost, but I do not pay bills until I have seen the details.”

It emerged he had instructed council staff to mark out the space, which read ‘council member permit holder only’.
